Mt.Gaya is located at the southwest border of Seongju, and it stretches over Gyeongsangnam-do Hapcheon-gun, Geochang-gun and Gyeongsangbak-do Seongju-gun.
Mt. Gaya was designated as a national park in 1972. The main peak is Chilbulbong(1,433m) and with Udubong, Namsan, Danjibong, Namsan 1-bong, Maehwasan etc, which are around 1,000m in height, Mt. Gaya is renowned for it’s outstanding sceneryand diverse ridgelines.
Follow the Circular Road from Suryun-myeon to Mt. Gaya, and you’ll be able to find exquisite dark-red cliffs reaching far into the sky. And although there isn’t a temple as famous as Haein-sa in this area, there are Beopsu-sa and ruins of Simwon-sa located in Seongju.
And there is a unique path up the mountain in Yonggigol and Simwongol, which stretches along the valley and waterfalls. In Yonggigol, you’ll be able to enjoy the splendor and masculine beauty of Mt. Gaya.
The crystal valley, which runs along the path, adds the exquisiteness of mountain climbing. The path through Seoseongjae from Simwongol, leading to Yonggigol has many attractions. The forest is exuberant with Ttalbae trees and Acer monos, and there are wild rabbits and squirrels romping about, providing a great nature education, and is without a doubt a perfect mountain climbing course for families.
If you look down on strangely shaped cliffs blended with tinted autumnal leaves from the top of the mountain, you will gasp at the mystic of nature. And Mt. Gaya in winter covered with snow, is like a beautifully painted landscape.
